Dumpster “Daze”

Saturday, May 6th there will be a dumpster parked in the alley behind the church—anything that you want to throw out from classrooms, offices, archives, basement, boiler room, etc—come that day and “PITCH IN” the dumpster that is!

In a note the rector received on March 15th, from the Rev. Gordon Price, Assistant Rector at Trinity in the late 1940’s he writes among other things “ Glad to say Ruth is making slow progress following her heart and breathing scare last November. As for me, I just keep on keeping on!”

Trinity Choir to Sing at General Convention

Make a short-term commitment to sing in the choir, and join us in leading two services at the convention.

The Schedule:

Services at Convention: Tuesday, June 13 9:30 A.M. service, arrival time TBA Trinity Choir alone leading worship
Saturday, June 17 10:00 A.M. service, arrival at 8:00 A.M. Joint Deanery Choir leading worship
Rehearsal for Deanery Choir: Wednesday, June 14
6:45 to 9:00 P.M. at the Convention Center

Services and Rehearsals at Trinity: Sundays, May 7 through June 11
8:30 A.M. rehearsal in our 3rd floor choir room, 10:30 A.M. service

This ad hoc choir will meet on May 7 to begin rehearsal and get organized without the professional section leaders. On May 7 and 28 we will lead congregational singing at the 10:30 service but not perform choral anthems. On May 14, 21, June 4 and 11, the section leaders will join us with the entire group singing choral anthems as well as leading congregational singing at the 10:30 service.

The Music:

We will celebrate Trinity Sunday (June 11) with selections of Appalachian music, featuring some great American Mountain Hymns and the wonderful anthem “Hark! I Hear the Harps Eternal.” And what better way to welcome the world to the Diocese of Southern Ohio than by repeating this wonderful Appalachian music for the opening service of the General Convention. Other great traditional music of the Easter and Pentecost seasons will be featured for the services at Trinity.

The Commitment:

Preparing for these events takes consistent rehearsal. A willingness to participate and an ability to attend all or nearly all rehearsals are essential. Obviously availability for the convention center rehearsal and service is a given. Some experience with choral singing is necessary, but the repertoire is being selected to make it more accessible to the average singer than our usual faire.

Get involved:

Contact Kevin Wines via email at and let me know what choral part you sing (soprano, alto…). Be sure to include your email address and phone number. Also let me know of any schedule conflicts you may have.

Hopefully you’ll enjoy this so much you’ll come back in the fall!!!

Rector's Reflection - The Rev. Richard A. Burnett

Dear Friends:

Our shared run toward a renewed and deeper hospitality at Trinity is turning the corner. Just a few Sundays ago we re-entered the church, and every week since people have delighted in the beauty and warmth brought by the restoration. Heading toward Easter celebrations we will use the church and re-configured library in our Parish House creatively for worship, classes, planning meetings, informal conversations and fellowship. On the Saturday before Easter the church will be the setting for a celebration of the Paschal Mystery at the Great Vigil of Easter at 7:00 pm. And on Easter Day we will assemble for Festival Eucharists at 8:00 am and 10:30 am. Plan to greet many old friends, and meet new ones, at the Easter Brunch between the liturgies.

“A Plan for Our Time” - Trinity Church’s five-year plan adopted by the Annual Parish Meeting in January 2004—calls for decisive action in five essentials of parish life: 1.) Membership; 2.) Worship and Building Design/Usage; 3.) Education; 4.) Stewardship and 5.) Community Ministries. By any measure, deeper hospitality plays a critical role in all of these, and the vestry and I, joined by Mother Abby and other staff members, will review the whole plan at our upcoming retreat day. Please pray for us as we explore possibilities and set priorities for our life together.

On Sunday, April 30, Trinity will acknowledge all who have given so generously to the Capital Campaign which, to date, is nearing the $1.2 million level. Of course, you’ll remember that the total goal is $1.5 million, so we still have more work to do, but we have come a long way by faith and with commitment. The evensong on the 30th will be a fitting way to say thanks to so many in our parish, in our Columbus community and around the country who have benefited this church at this time in its history.

Speaking of history: the 75th General Convention of the Episcopal Church will meet in Columbus from June 13-21, and there are many ways that you can help in hosting the 10,000-12,000 people who will come to our city for this wonderful combination legislative meeting/trade show/worship festival/family reunion. Please contact Jane Dupke Curry in the Bishop’s Center, (461-8429 or ) to volunteer at the Convention Center. At Trinity, many events are planned daily in the Church and Parish House, and Jim Bliek (221-5351 or ) would be delighted to get you on board, as well. Let’s be ready to offer our most faithful and creative welcome to the national and world-wide church in June!

Peace-filled blessings,

Dick

He Is Risen: The Lord is Risen Indeed
by Mother Abby

The traditional Easter Greeting is heralded in the epistle appointed from the book of Colossians for the celebration of the Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ in this way: “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God” (King James Version). Colossians is my favorite of the selected lessons (periscope) of the Easter season!

The Apostle Paul in his greetings seems to be saying to us, “This Is It, Folks! Now and Forever,” somewhat like the popular saying of Bugs Bunny signing off the end of each of his cartoon episode, “That’s All Folks!”

“This Is It, Folks! Now and Forever” in our decision to follow Christ, in committing our lives to him, unconditionally, unequivocally, unreservedly in total obedience and surrender to him in thought, word and deed, ceasing the limping between Jesus and any unwholesome desires that we still have in us.

“This Is It Folks! Now and Forever” evokes Joshua of the Old Testament’s challenge to the children of Israel to “choose you this day whom ye will serve” and Joshua’s declaration to the community, “but for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Certainly the traditional Easter greetings brings to mind the line of that great hymn of the moment of decision, ‘Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide!’

Ultimately our definite and final moment of decision in the Risen Christ in our lives “above all else” is the Gift of Jesus’ Resurrection to us at Easter.

Easter Greetings! Alleluia!
