New banner adds beauty to Trinity altar space

Worshipers at Trinity can't help but notice the beautiful new banner behind the lectern. It came to us via a long collaboration between parishoner Jim Bliek and Debbie Anderson, a noted fabric artist who has had many commissions and shows of her works, most recently at the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. She lives in Bexley and is a member of First Congregational Church. She and Jim worked for about three years on the design and creation process. The banner was completed for Trinity Sunday 2006, just in time for General Convention.

Each side of the banner reflects motifs in the Sanctuary. The basic shape echoes the gothic arches throughout the church. Both sides incorporate a small image of the Greek Cross in the great East window (above the altar). The cross is near the top of the window, flanking the central motif of Christ in Glory.

The "Trinity" side of the banner echoes the five lancets of the East window. The dominant feature at the banner's center depicts the breastplate of the Angel Gabriel, the central figure of the five lancets. Observers can easily track the other similarities between the banner and the window. The banner's colors are those used in the window itself.

The reverse side shows the angelic chorus in flight. Angels are found throughout the Sanctuary -- carved on the pulpit, in many of the windows, on the lectern and the reredos.

The banner was purchased through the Memorial Fund.
